Cast Iron

CastIronCollageThe Experience: You can read about my general experience at the Blue Moon Burger Bash here, so check that out to get the scoop on the entire event. I will go over the rules I put in place for myself again. First, I would not sample burgers from places I’d previously visited, no matter how much I wanted to. Not having the burgers from Go Burger, Schnippers, and Burger & Barrel was very difficult for me. Second, I would try to eat burgers at New York restaurants that normally serve burgers. I played fast and loose with this rule. Third, I would not eat to the point that I’d become sick. This was the hardest one to stick to. Abiding by those rules I grabbed the burger that will be served at Franklin Becker’s soon-to-be-serving-the-public restaurant, Cast Iron.

Burger Ordered: Widmer’s Wisco Burger

The Taste: Becker served mini burgers. The program listed that they’d be topped with Joe Widmer’s Wisco cheese whiz, jalapeno pickles, special sauce, and Nueske bacon. Mine was missing a few of those elements, but  it did come with a side of tater tots covered in spicy mayonnaise. The burger had a fantastic char-grill flavor. I’m very curious to know how a full-sized burger would stack up, but in mini form Cast Iron’s offering was a home run. The tater tots were also tasty, but the sauce on them was not my favorite.

The Verdict: The mini burger at the Burger Bash was enough to make me curious about Cast Iron. I’ll definitely head into the proper restaurant when it opens to see how a full-sized meal from Mr. Becker tastes.

Cast Iron will be located on West 18th Street (address to-be-updated).
